With her performance piece musician and composer Melodi Soltani, who mainly works under the name Ghazal, wants to investigate the connections and boundaries between the spaces that are inhabited by the one that gives birth to you, the one who gave birth to the one birthing you, and so on moving back through your genealogy. The work is an embodied and auditive examination of heritage and an eager attempt at finding common ground, when cultural, linguistic and earthly/mortal borders create disruption and limits. In her identity – and ethnicity-seeking performance, Melodi Soltani will channel elements from her foremothers through her own body and through a computer. Processed rhythms from a passed grandmother’s daf-drum and words from a mother in a mother tongue that is also a second language, are the keystones of the work’s soundscape; elements that have not before met.
The performance will take place in the window facing the street at Annual Reportt, as part of the group show (Into and) Out of this World. Here, the viewer will see and hear it amidst the street noise, from the other side of the glass.
