Soap is a duo-exhibition, an art installation and a Kitchen Sink Drama by the artists Emilia Bergmark and Maria Gondek, which will be on view at the kitchen show room of NicolajBo 16 september – 9 oktober, the show is developed in collaboration with Sirin Gallery.
The artist talk will be a conversation between the artists about soap operas, cleaning products and the pressure to perform in a lifestyle home. The talk will be mediated by Nanna Balslev Strøjer, a curator and writer that has written a text for the exhibition.
A modern designer kitchen was the starting point for the art project Soap – a collaboration between the artists Emilia Bergmark and Maria Gondek with Sirin Gallery. In fact, the whole exhibition unfolds around a kitchen, and as such, it grew to become a collaboration with the kitchen show room of NicolajBo.
Soap combines works by the two artists in and around the kitchen show room. Sculptural wall and floor works by Gondek draws on built-in house interior such as plumbing systems and electrical wiring. Combining home-hardware and body-software through a DIY spiritual approach, the works literally speaks directly to our human sensory system and embody feelings of empathy.
Created for the kitchen is the sound-and-sculpture installation called Soap, that Bergmark calls a ’Kitchen Sink Drama’. The protagonist of this drama is a talking kitchen sink and the sink performs an ’act out’ of a soap opera in which ’her friends, the cleaning products’ are the cast.
With a humorous approach Soap addresses current topics such as isolation, anxiety and the gendered stereotypes of the modern home making.
